National Legal Aid (NLA) represents the Directors of each of the eight State / Territory Legal Aid Commissions in Australia. Legal Aid Act 1977 (Cth).

The Legal Aid Commission of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is established under the Legal Aid Act 1977. The aim of the Commission is to work to inform people of their legal rights and obligations and to improve their access to the justice system. Legal Aid Act 1977 (ACT).

The NSW Legal Aid Commission is established under the Legal Aid Commission Act 1979 of New South Wales and is an independent statutory body. They provide legal aid and other legal services to disadvantaged people. Legal Aid Commission Act 1979 (NSW).

NT Legal Aid is an independent statutory Commission and provides access to the law and legal assistance to people who are unable to afford the services of a private lawyer. Legal Aid in the NT usually only assists in matters that are before the Courts in the Northern Territory, but assistance can be given to apply for aid from another Commission in another State or Territory. Legal Aid Queensland is a statutory authority that provides legal assistance to financially and socially disadvantaged Queenslanders. Legal Aid Act 1997 (Qld).

The Legal Services Commission is jointly funded by both the South Australian and the Commonwealth Governments. It was established in 1977 to increase access to legal services for those people who cannot afford to pay for private legal representation. Legal Services Commission Act 1977 (SA).

The legal aid commission of Tasmania assists in the provision of services including "free" legal advice, duty solicitor services, child support services, community legal education adn legal representation. Legal Aid Commission Act 1990 (Tas).

VLA's objective is to provide legal aid in the most effective, economic and efficient manner, to manage its resources to make legal aid available at a reasonable cost to the community and on an equitable basis throughout the State, to provide to the community improved access to justice and legal remedies, to pursue innovative means of providing legal aid, directed at minimising the need for individual legal services in the community.
