New South Wales Legal Centres New South Wales Legal Centres provide free legal information to assist you in understanding and protecting your legal rights. They provide confidential advice aimed at assisting people in making informed choices and decisions about the options available to them. Within the legal system, they also perform important roles in court representation, advocacy, law reform, test case litigation, referrals and community legal education. Aboriginal Women's Legal Resources Centre Suite 102 Aged Care Rights Service Suite 505, Level 5 Promotes the rights of older residents of supported accommodation in NSW. Advice and assistance is available to people 55 years and over who live in or plan to live in supported accommodation, such as retirement villages, serviced apartments, hostels, nursing homes and boarding houses. Also provides educational workshops, seminars and publications. Blue Mountains Community Legal Centre 1st Floor, 80 Main Street Provides free generalist legal advice for problems including domestic violence, family law, immigration, consumer credit, social security matters, children's law and tenancy law. Financial counselling and domestic violence court assistance. Also community legal education. Catchment area: Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Bathurst areas. Central Coast Legal Centre PO Box 246 Provides legal advice, information, referral and in some instances representation. Advises on Family Law, domestic violence, credit and debt, children's and youth law, discrimination and other civil matters. Telephone advice on Thursdays between 2 and 4 pm. Outreach interviews are conducted at Woy Woy and Lake Munmorah on alternate Wednesdays. Central Coast Tenancy Advice Service PO Box 293 Community Legal Service for Western NSW 51 Bultje Street Offers a toll-free service line on Tuesdays (2 - 5 pm) Wednesdays (6 - 8 pm) and Fridays (10 - 1 pm). Centre takes on some casework. Both the Rural Women's Outreach service and the generalist service have a community legal education component. The Rural Women's Outreach Solicitor has a focus on domestic violence, women's and Aboriginal issues in the Orana region of NSW. Consumer Credit Legal Centre Level 1 Provides free legal advice about borrower's rights, consumer credit and debt problems including banking disputes, bankruptcy, excessive interest rates, harassment, guarantees, repossessions, statements of claim and summonses, unfair lending practices, etc. Court Support Scheme 174 Broadway (cnr Shepherd St) Provides information, support and referrals to people attending local courts in NSW on criminal matters through a network of 40 volunteers. Does not provide legal advice. Disability Discrimination Legal Centre Shop 99, 1 - 5 Meeks Street Provides free legal advice, representation and assistance for problems involving discrimination against people with disabilities and their associates. Also provide community legal education workshops and seminars and undertake a significant amount of policy work. The Centre is not a generalist legal service for people with disabilities. The Centre only assist in cases of disability discrimination under either the federal Disability Discrimination Act or the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act. Domestic Violence Advocacy Service PO Box H154
Harris Park Free statewide telephone legal advice for women on issues relating to domestic violence. Other services include representation in Sydney by solicitors on applications for Apprehended Violence Orders, advocacy by asking police to proceed with charges for an offence or application for an Apprehended Violence Order, referral to sympathetic solicitors, community education, training sessions for service providers, and research. Eastern Sydney Tenancy Advice Service PO Box 1091 Far West Community Legal Centre 5 Chloride Street Provides free legal advice, referral and community legal education to residents of the far west of NSW, including the communities of Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Wentworth, Tibooburra, White Cliffs Wanaaring and Ivanhoe. Areas of law include credit and discrimination, employment and criminal matters. Centre open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Interviews by appointment (10am to 12pm Monday & Tuesday) and phone advice 2pm to 4pm Wednesday. Hawkesbury Nepean Community Legal Centre 13 Bosworth Street Centre offers free legal advice and advocacy to people in the Hawkesbury/Penrith area. Domestic violence is a priority and the centre operates a domestic violence court support service at Windsor court. Generalist advice service covering most areas of law. Has an Aboriginal Legal Access worker, and also targets services to youth and caravan park residents. Also community development law reform and legal education. Advice line Mon 12-1, 2-4. Outreach services to Riverstone and South Penrith. Hunter Community Legal Centre PO Box 84 Provides free legal advice and assistance for people in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Upper and Lower Hunter regions of New South Wales. Areas: domestic violence, credit and debt, family law, victim's compensation and tenancy. Also community development and legal education. Illawarra Legal Centre PO Box 139 Provides free legal and related information, advice and representation to residents of the Illawarra Region and some surrounding areas. Specific services offered include: general law, child support (residential parents only), welfare rights, tenancy, credit and debt. A full CLE program is offered both to community workers and the general public. Immigration Advice and Rights Centre Level 4 Provides free immigration advice through telephone and drop-in centres and provides case assistance to clients who fit in our casework guidelines. Also runs immigration workshops for community workers as well as private migration agents. Publications include Immigration Kit and Immigration Newsletter. Inner City Legal Centre PO Box 368 Provides free legal advice, assistance and advocacy to residents, workers, community and welfare agencies in the Sydney inner city (also north shore and eastern suburbs) for problems including crime, youth, tenancy, unfair dismissals, domestic violence, debt, immigration and victims compensation. Casework in domestic violence, discrimination, unfair dismissal, victims compensation and adult and juvenile criminal justice. Kingsford Legal Centre 11 Rainbow Street Provides free legal advice for local residents of Botany and Randwick municipalities unable to afford a private solicitor for problems including consumer debt, criminal law, discrimination, employment, family law, mental health, motor traffic matters, social security problems, tenancy, and sexual harassment. Speciality: Discrimination (statewide service). The centre also provides a clinical teaching environment for law and social work students of the Uni of New South Wales. Specialist employment law: clinic and advice sessions. Macquarie Legal Centre PO Box 406 Telephone advice - Mon and Thurs 2.00-4.30pm. Face to face/in person advice - Thursday evenings 5.30-8.00 by appointment only. Provides legal advice for residents of Western Sydney. The centre auspices a DVCAS for Ryde & Parramatta courts, a Children's Court Assistance scheme as well as a supervised contact and changeover service for children and parents in central western Sydney. The Youth Education Worker is involved in cle and law reform projects relating to legal issues which affect young people. Marrickville Legal Centre 338 Illawarra Road Provides free legal advice and assistance to individuals and community organisations in the inner west area of Sydney. Services include a free tenants advice, free children's legal service for all persons under 18 in NSW and free Women's Domestic Violence Court Assistance Scheme. Mid Coast Tenancy Advice Service PO Box 5213 Mt Druitt & Area Community Legal Centre PO Box 471 Provides free legal advice, casework and referral to people who live in the Blacktown Local Government Area and the East Ward of the Penrith Local Government Area. The centre provides basic general legal advice in areas of law including domestic violence, family law, child support, tenancy, financial services, wills, motor vehicle accidents, neighbourhood disputes and complaints against Government departments. North & North West Community Legal Service PO Box 857 A generalist legal service which also operates an outreach service to a number of locations within the New England and north west regions of NSW. Centre has two accredited mediators on staff. Northern Sydney Tenancy Advice Service Suite 201, 75 Archer Street Public Interest Advocacy Centre Level 1 Legal and policy centre promoting public interest issues, especially access to justice and the legal system, health, discrimination and accountability of government and the private sector. 'Public interest matters' are those of broad public importance or concern which affect more than individuals or small groups; where the interests of different sectors of the community conflict, PIAC represents those under-represented or marginalised by poverty, gender, ethnicity, geographic isolation or some other factor.
